Together, we’re empowering Catholic men to live their faith at home, in their parish, at work and in their community.
Christ The King Council was established on the 3rd of April 1955 in Castleton Corners at St. Theresa’s Church on Staten Island. The Chapter is the sixth oldest Chapter on Staten Island. The Knights serviced the parishes of St Theresa’s and Blessed Sacrament. The First Grand knight was Neil P. McGroaty.
The Council grew by leaps and bounds through the 1950’s and 1960’s. The council broke ground on a stand-alone building “Kings Castle” on April 10th, 1960 at 300 Manor Road right across from the Staten Island Armory. This was the home to the Council till 2019 when the building was sold. Since then, the Council meets at Blessed Sacrament Parish located at 30 Manor Road.
The Councils priority has always been the principal of charity. The Knights have been active in charity events all over Staten Island since our inception. You might remember seeing our Knights out canning in our red and yellow aprons in support of different charities all over the north shore of Staten Island. We supported St. Vincent’s Hospital (currently Richmond University Medical Center) financially as a member of the Bell Society. The Council also provided an ultrasound machine to the hospital. The Council has sponsored the Knights “Basketball Free Throw Contest” at Blessed Sacrament Church for over 40 years. The Council has been holding its annual mass in honor of Christ the King for the last 70 years at Blessed Sacrament Parish and the former Christ the King Chapel in Port Richmond. The Council raised money along with the Columbiettes for The Jerry Lewis Muscular Dystrophy Telethon for years, using the “Kings Castle” as the Staten Island Pledge Center. The Council has volunteered for years at the Special Olympics games of Staten Island. The Council has run a toy drive at Christmas benefiting The New York City Administration for Children’s Services for over 25 years.
Throughout the 1970’s, 80’s, 90’s and into the 2000’s the Council held various dinner dances, parties, casino nights and gatherings to support a plethora of charities from disaster relief to The Good Council Homes for homeless pregnant women and mothers.
Our Council has supported our parishes financially and spiritually with communion breakfasts, outdoor rosaries, scholarships to students and volunteering at various parish events.
The Christ The King Council is entering our 70th year and is going as strong as ever with a dedicated group of Knights who are interested in helping our community, the Parish of Blessed Sacrament, The Parish of Sacred Heart and our world to be a better place by following the examples of Jesus.
